ORA-09817: Write to audit file failed No space left on device

Applies to:
Database Management Software Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: 8.1.7.4 to 11.1
This problem can occur on any platform.

Symptoms
When Startin the database, below Errors occurred

ERROR:
ORA-09817: Write to audit file failed.
HP-UX Error: 28: No space left on device
ORA-09945: Unable to initialize the audit trail file

Cause
Connect to databas using sqlplus and execute:

sql> show parameter audit_dump_dest;

It will give path where audit file are created. Check this mount point byRunning df -h found that the Mount point where Oracle is installed is full causing the Startup to throw errors


Solution
To implement the solution, please execute the following steps::

Free some space from the Mountpoint

Files that can be deleted are tracefiles in the UDUMP / BDUMP / CDUMP

Note: its advisable to backup the files before they are dropped since they might be useful in future
